There are tons of different ways to personalize your vehicle, especially if it’s already a lifted Jeep. If you’re an off-roader, chances are you’ve already gotten a bunch of great upgrades and aftermarket parts to help with off-road activities, but a great way to further customize your Jeep and make it your own is by adding underglow. Underglow has been around since the late 1980s and became really popular throughout the ‘90s and early ‘00s, aided greatly by the popularity of The Fast and the Furious. Today we wanted to give you the rundown on what exactly underglow is, what the different types are and some other things you should know before adding it to your lifted Jeep.
If you’ve got a picture in your mind right now for what underglow is there’s a pretty good chance you’re right, as it’s basically exactly what it sounds like. Underglow is a type of lighting accessory that can be mounted underneath your vehicle to create a glowing effect on the street below it. In addition to simply making your vehicle look really cool, it does make your vehicle more visible to other vehicles in areas where there isn’t a lot of other light.
There are two main types of underglow lighting, and it’s up to you to choose which is the best fit for your truck. The first is neon underglow lighting, which is incredibly customizable and available in more than 100 different hues. Unfortunately, neon underglow is essentially a tube of compressed gas, which means it’s not the most durable option for you. If you do a lot of off-road activities, this probably isn’t the right choice for you.
The other type of underglow is LED lighting, just like a vast majority of headlights, taillights and other automotive lighting. Practically speaking, LED lighting is superior in every aspect in comparison to neon, but there are those people who think neon lights have a better look to them. They’re far superior in durability, however, and also happen to be more efficient, less expensive, easier to install and even more customizable. So, the obvious choice is to get LED underglow lighting.
Rather than choosing between neon and LED lighting, you’ll have other decisions to make when it comes to the actual underglow kit you choose. You’ll want to make sure you’re getting the right length, the right construction and the right beam. It’s very important to study the laws regarding aftermarket parts on your vehicle before installing anything. While a vast majority of things will be just fine in most places, there are certainly parts out there about which you have to be careful. Underglow lighting is one of them, with laws varying from state to state and dependent on many different factors. So make sure to read up on your local laws before deciding to install underglow on your lifted Jeep.
For example, here in Oklahoma underglow lighting is illegal. It’s considered a non-moving traffic violation, so you can’t turn on your underglow even if your vehicle is parked or otherwise turned off. But if you live outside of Oklahoma, your laws might be different, such as in Missouri where underglow is legal as long as it’s mostly white, yellow or amber colored, or in Texas where they’re legal as long as they’re not lit while driving on most public roads.
